Editor note: Is Keysi Fighting Method better or worse than  Defence lab and what are the differences. To learn more about defence Lab I went to the instructor of their Rome Lab Dorian Colombi to ask those questions and a lot more- as always please like share and enjoy

this interview is also in Italian

q. Hi Dorian Thanks for taking the time to chat with our site. As you know we have a great deal of people coming to our site looking for information on the Keysi Fighting Method and Defence Lab. I am aware that you are among only a handful of people who has trained in KFM , Keysi By Justo and now Defence Lab. Could you first of all explain how you first discovered the Keysi Fighting Method?

a. Hello Andrew, it’s me who thank you and your site for the opportunity you have given me to talk more about a subject that fascinates me so much. I found the KFM few years ago, thanks to my meeting with Maurizio Zuppa and Simone Casile, two very important instructors (I thank them for their friendship and for the training) who first brought and spread the KFM in Italy. I remained immediately fascinated by its unconventional approach that characterized it.

q. After KFM stopped trading as a business its founders went onto separate paths and you eventually have become part of the Defence Lab team, could you tell us why you finally settled on Defence Lab?

a. It was definitely a big hit when I came to know of the separation of Andy and Justo, KFM at that time reached excellent results. But these things happen, we are constantly evolving, I personally believe that there is always a good reason why important events occur in the life of each of us. In this case, the important thing was that as a result of their separation is occurred the birth of Defence Lab. Defence Lab is not merely a “continuation” of something that was pre-existent and it’s not something that intends to “differentiate” from the past. DL represents a step further, a change of perspective. His scientific approach to the field of self defence is culturally impressive. Transmits to the instructor a tremendous amount of practical, essential and accurate informations so that his training as a man and as a coach is to upper level. We study the chemistry of the body, the mental approach and the various factors that influence us in real situations and not only: you get comprehensive training that ensures that an instructor is able to interact with their students and know how to guide them step by step towards the realization of their goals. But that’s not all. In order for the instructor be fully and concretely a professional, he is trained and assisted in starting his own economic enterprise, with practical information on how to act, followed step by step by an outstanding customer care. To say nothing of the platform that will soon be made visible to all (for now is exclusive of the Lead Instructors), a website full of special features, videos for students, online shops, and personal area in which to find a real full immersion of technical videos with a lot of manuals concerning all the topics of which I have mentioned before. All online, all at just a click away, wherever you are! If then we approach the discourse of the physical and technical preparation and the level of quality that Sir Andy Norman and his Crew have created and that they are transmitting, (as you yourself have seen to the seminar you attended), well now I ask to you: how could I not choose Defence Lab?

q. My understanding is that you are a very experienced martial artist and you have trained with Andy Norman for some years, could you explain to others what training with Andy Norman is like?

a. Thank you for the compliment, rather than a martial artist I consider myself a person on the way to the continuous self research and the world of martial art helps me in this regard. Sir Andy Norman is a man with a fascinating, alive and creative mind and he’s extremely sympathetic .. which is good when you’re in front of someone so prepared! Training with him means that you are the center of attention, not him (despite him with his charisma completely captures your attention). With him you are constantly stimulated to understanding, this has the result that you can be self-employed in your own research. Andy is unconventional and this is evidenced by how he developed the DNA (Defense In Attack, the defense system of Defence Lab). Point to the simplicity meant as naturalness and instinctivity of the technical movements. Simple means quality and not “poor” content, in fact it is very difficult to achieve simplicity and it’s the result of continuous research and experience (that’s the reason why we are a Lab). He is a person who is not content, he is continuously search for the essential, in this case the primordial nature of human reactions. Technically train with him is to make a great leap forward, try to ask it to Tom Cruise! (Andy trained Mr. Cruise for the movie “Jack Reacher”)

q. You are running the Defence Lab in Rome, I was lucky enough to visit in 2012 and was blown away with how beautiful the city is. However it is without doubt the home of gladiators. Were you born there and if not why did you settle in Rome?

a. I’m originally from a small town in northern Italy, is called Sanremo, and almost 4 years ago when I came for the first time in Rome, well, I remained completely captured! The reasons that led me to relocate to a place so far from where I lived (800 km from my hometown) were many, and were due to the intense emotional fervor inside me to make a radical change to my life. Rome was and is perfect for such a step. As soon as I arrived, it was an August evening, the first thing I wanted to do was go to see the Colosseum. Imagine that scene: on a Vespa (the typical Italian bike) along Via dei Fori Imperiali that was closed to traffic of cars at that time, with the sky at dusk .. the Colosseum in front of me, lit. I was in Rome, the city of the great opportunity! Opportunities, but not easy: to start from scratch and build my new life and the business was really a remarkable effort, a mix of perseverance both physical, mental and economic. Those who do not live in a big city believes that it is easy to find space, it really is not easy at all, and the competition is even more fierce. People have already available an huge offer of services, and then to characterize your own product is not easy. Is necessary the determination of a gladiator!

q. Sticking with the Gladiator theme, I felt an incredible intensity when I was near the Colosseum, its an amazing experience just being near it. Do you find training inspiration from living and training in this city?

a. Surely! With many of my students very frequently I joke on this fact, we are the gladiators of Defence Lab, this encourages us to never get lost. Never Give Up is one of our mottos! I like to think about the positive side of what was an arena where human beings were struggling for survival, even if all of this was for the fun of the huge amount of people who went to see this amazing show. Nowadays we’re pretty domesticated, framed in strict social rules (many of which are necessary) but at the same time we have lost touch with our natural and instinctive part. Today our fight takes place against the stress that most of the time it is generated by an overdose of mental activity. Those who risk their lives (as did the gladiators) necessarily live in the present moment, the instant. My training focuses on this reappropriation of one’s instincts so that if we just can not avoid violence, we have trained the emotional intelligence that allows us to use ourselves to survive in a real situation.

q. A lot of people were quite disappointed when I wrote an article about Defence Lab being better than KFM, However this was my personal view and I feel it is no different than me saying that a Samsung Phone is better than an iphone. As someone who has trained in KFM and now Defence Lab could you tell me which you think is better and why?

a. I’ve also read your article, I found it very interesting. You see, there will always be a different opinion but the datum certainly very positive is that if there are many differing opinions, then the work you’ve done has touched the right cords. The answer that you ask to me is pretty simple to give, considering what I’ve said in previous questions. Before answer you let me say something more: KFM was a method that broke all the schemes, and had ambitious goals. I think, however, for a variety of reasons, there has been an immaturity in spreading a method properly so original, both from a point of view of the image, both from a point of view of the content. The image was too rude, raw, sometimes ostentatiously “realistic”. There was talk of avoid the violence, but we all seemed violent. Now, this may work if you do you train with friends in a garage or in a park. But if you have to think to build yourself a profession, you need something else. In this case, Defence Lab goes to make up for these shortcomings and exceeded itself, cleans the brand working with a marketing at professional level. We are not violent, we study the violence to avoid it, and if that fails, we use ourselves to survive. As regards the content, KFM was powered by a fervent enthusiasm which had as a result to condense too much of everything. For us instructors teach the famous “weeks” was becoming a huge burden, especially for students. Too much work, sometimes done in a hurry, lowered the quality of the instructors both that their final result, the students. It had become really common, regardless of the country in which was being taught. Attention, the programs were gorgeous, but there was no synergy in the KFM Team as it is now in Defence Lab. Now the content is clear, simple, effective and have more logical. All of this has the consequence that we instructors feel more relaxed and happy, representing a brand that people likes and that opens doors rather than close them. Who would be annoyed by the statement that DL is better than KFM? Only those who don’t knows neither one nor the other. To those who ask me the same question that you asked, I always answer: try it! Now finally my answer: I prefer clearly Defence Lab, without any doubt!

q. You trained under the Keysi By Justo system and as a martial artist I think its important to show respect. Justo certainly created a legacy with his system and im sure it is very effective and credible, however many people are under the impression that Defence Lab and Keysi by Justo are the same system with different names. As you have experienced both, what would you say to a person who thought that? What are the differences?

a. I fully agree with your premises, it must shows the utmost respect for what has been created, especially since because you can’t buy a martial experience (as with everything in life) and noone can give it to you as a gift. It must be earned and fully lived. Therefore, from my own limited experience I can tell you this, Keysi by Justo is a fun martial art that is inspired by KFM and (despite trying to keep non-traditional) seems very similar to the traditional transmission schemes. It has nothing of the training contents that I was referring above concerning the Defence Lab’s methodical approach to both teaching activity and the business part. Of course, I do not dispute the technical validity of that system, definitely excellent. It also reiterates an atmosphere that had been created in KFM, as you rightly have noticed in your previous article, namely to aggregate people who flaunt security in “the best method for street fighting” with an attitude and a behavior like a “true warriors”. It may seem an exaggeration, of course, but the point is that all this automatically greatly limits the economic activity of the instructor because it cuts out a large part of people that will not want to ever come close to an environment advertised in this way. Defence Lab has gone beyond the superficial “brotherhood” that was present in KFM before and today still in the Keysi by Justo and it has come to a more concrete community made up of people who share experiences in the field of self defense and fitness training. I am referring to professionals, those who therefore approaching an DL instructor will found a person who is prepared and is updated continuously. Furthermore, the hierarchy that forms the International Team follows strict meritocratic rules in which are internationally recognized to the instructor both the years of training and the results in terms of the number of students.

Nothing is given in friendship or with a pat on the back, so to speak. Moreover, in the world there is now an impressive amount of different styles, many equally valid and you can not be in this industry without taking them into account and study them in depth. Andy and Defence Lab have an open mind vision and this is reflected in the fact that we treat personal defense in a practical and scientific evolved way, constantly looking for the distinctive feature genuinely effective. The human being is made of two arms, two legs, a head and a torso. An elbow will always be similar between different styles. What is, however, that sets them apart? The one who acts, its awareness, its knowledge. As I said before, in DL we study these topics and we move in a way that is truly innovative. Our bio mechanics has evolved, our movements are even faster and tightened. Have you been able to see with your eyes too! One can not say that they are the same thing if you really put in the game in the first person and directly experiencing what I’m talking about. The fact is that to get in the game you need to have a flexible mind that takes you beyond your solid current beliefs, coming out of your comfort zone. In this way there are an evolution, in the other you stay where you are.

q. Finally, how is your defence lab going? Are your students enjoying the training and are you enjoying being part of the organisation?

a. Here we are all crazy about the Black & Green! We have fun at every lesson, we train physically and technically and the students (both those who came from KFM that the new ones) are realizing how the quality of their learning is increased. I could not wish for more, I’m glad of my choice that required considerable courage on my part. I was among the ones at the forefront when it came to “brotherhood”, it was not easy to open my eyes and to realize. But I think that my face fears have been well rewarded. Now I work constantly with Defence Lab HQ, they are amazing people.

Thanks Dorian for taking the time to speak with us.

Thanks to you Andrew, it was a pleasure.

Never Give Up è uno dei nostri motti!
