It doesn’t matter if you partake in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu or not, everyone should have some type of grasp on self defense techniques in case they find themselves in a situation where it is needed. Black belts aren’t required, just an understanding and a desire to protect yourself in the heat of the moment!  We tend to think of street fights as wild brawls and lucky punches, but they can be easily transformed into a tactical match if you know how.

Attacking Their Feet For Damage Purposes Let’s assume that during the scuffle, the fight goes to the ground—because chances are very, very high that it will go to the ground.  In the heat of the moment, your attack is looking to cause damage via strikes, very rarely do you see street fights where the person attacking is looking to use Judo, Jiu Jitsu, etc…they just want to PUNCH! In a street fight, the very last thing that you want to do is drop to the ground.  While this is common place in BJJ or MMA, it isn’t for a no holds barred brawl. Assuming the fight hits the ground, it’s okay to let them obtain your back.  As long as you are able to defend your face and throat from strikes and choke attempts, you’re in good shape!  Chances are your attacker likely doesn’t understand the grappling game, so once they do take your back; it’s not farfetched to assume that they will eventually cross their feet. Once they do, simply take either leg and place it on top of their crossed feet.  By locking your legs together, you simply have to extend your hips forward and this will cause immense pressure on their legs, likely breaking some bones in the process, allowing you to escape from the fight.

Defending Against Ground & Pound Situations Another scenario to prepare for is if your attacker is in the dominant position on top and they are looking to reign down strikes.  For this scenario, we’ll be in bottom half guard so naturally you’d want to close the distance and try to hug them close to you, but that isn’t always possible. It should be noted that there are some other Leg Lock techniques that provide this same cover, when done correctly.

To escape this situation, take your shin and bring it across their torso, while slightly inching off to the side.  Once you move off to the side, reach up and try to grab hold of either their tricep or just under their armpit, to help setup your next move. From here, you’ll want to shoot your hips out while tilting him down to the ground.  This should be a rather easy task given the momentum and leverage you have created with your body, allowing you to gain the dominant position. Once they fall, they should be in a position where their leg is at your mercy.

Chances are that once they fall they will turn back into you in order to throw more punches, which simply allows you to work a modified 50/50 guard and attack with a heel hook. No matter how you spin it, there is always some sort of defense that is both practical and effective in a street fight.  Avoid panicking and hoping someone will break it up and rely on your Jiu Jitsu and you’ll be all set!
