Technique Focus- The Keysi Pensador

Welcome to a new and exciting look at the various techniques that exists within martial arts. This will be a regular feature and today we are starting off with the overview of Keysi Fighting Methods Famous Pensador Technique or as it is called through its English translation the Thinking Man. By the end of the post you will understand just what the Pensador is and if you want to add it to your training.

Now firstly bear in mind that as I write this I am no keysi or KFM expert. I have attended just 2 seminars so my knowledge of the technique is just surface level. However I will discuss what the technique is and if I feel it works when faced with real life aggression.

What is the Pensador?

The Pensdaor is a difficult concept to grasp but luckily it is essentially a very easy technique to train. To describe what it is I feel that perhaps it would be better to see it in action. However before you watch the clip below please consider the situation you would use this is.

You are walking home late one night and find yourself near a gang of youths and for no reason and without warning they approach you and start raining blows onto your face. What do you do?

The Pensador provides a partial answer to this question, what you do is very natural, you cover up your head with your arms, and defend your head to literally stop you from having your head bashed in. It is a basic but natural defensive action.

How I do love those trailers! So cool.

Now you get the idea, the Pensador is actually just a method of covering up your head from attack! This is something we all naturally do when starting to get punched or kicked. I have done it and it works. Your brain is your computer and as such you want to protect it as best as you can.

So in a Nutshell the Pensador is simply a version of a boxers ‘high guard’ however adapted for the street. The real beauty of Keysi Fighting Method is that they have taken the pensador and created a series of techniques that work from this position. It allows you to fight whilst still being covered up from harm. It turns a defensive position into an offensive one.

The Pensador doesn’t take long to learn and in fact numerous systems have a version of this type of guard. Yet as it can easily be added to any system and used in a variety of ways is what makes the Pensador so valuable. After training the Pensador for only a few hours it ‘clicked’ with me. I have since made it a permanent part of my own training.

Now the kesyi Fighting method and the pensador may not be for you however all I can say is congratulations to Andy Norman and Justo Dieguez (the founders of KFM) for creating the Pensador and bringing it to the world. This is one technique that can make the difference should you unfortunately face real violence. It works and as such I can only recommend it.

Keep safe

Andrew
